….free gigabit WiFi in 2015.  Notice the word “free” in there?  I think that is a good thing, don’t you? In this age of wireless super networks spreading the reach Internet across the planet you soon will be able to cut down on your carrier’s mobile data plan expenses while eating a famous New York Sabrett hot dog while checking your stock prices on your iPhone 6 Plus and hailing a cab on the corner of 5th Avenue and 14th Street all via free gigabit Wi-Fi compliments of the Big Apple.

The fact that the bandwidth is in Gigabytes should be able to provide the average New Yorker with enough data pipe to be able to stream high definition content on their mobile devices as well – so that is good news for you Dancing With The Stars fans!

Those payphones today are hardly used anymore but because of of the fact that they are spread throughout the five boroughs makes them ideal locations for wireless access points.  Apparently the city has been entertaining implementing this project for a number of years now and this week they finally announced the final plans of the endeavor.

An additional service that will be deployed in these locations will be digital billboards as well which will provide the city with a hefty supply of advertising revenue.

The final project is looking at turning what is an antiquated payphone today into a Gigabit Wi-Fi zone equipped with an Android tablet that will be able to present city service applications and the ability for users to be able to make phone calls…..all for FREE!

The business case in itself seems pretty sound indeed seeing that the construction and maintenance costs will be around $200 million but the forecast advertising revenue alone will be around $500 million over the next 12 years.

Good for you New York!

Cheers,

Richard the Technology Guy.
